Puako Petroglyph Field

We were staying literally across the street from the Puako Petroglyph Field, and I would have felt like we had failed had we not at least stopped to see what it was about.  Near the parking lot were a lot of good examples of the kinds of petroglyphs we could expect.  We had fun coming up with our own stories for them.  This guy is either a hunter, a canoe racer, or he really likes catching butterflies in his butterfly net.

Here we have a Hawaiian who wants to walk like an Egyptian, and a Hawaiian who needs more practice riding a horse.

We couldn't come up with anything exciting for the turtle...maybe he was sunbathing?

After the initial grouping of carvings we followed a path through the strangest forest.  The wood was super creaky as the wind blew, and the branches were covered with big, nasty thorns.  It was definitely the kind of walk where you stay on the path.

At the end of the path we were rewarded with the largest group of gathered petroglyphs, a whole field of them.  Jeremy's theory is that the prehistoric parents gave their kids rocks and said, "Go entertain yourselves.  We're busy."  And that the field is really a great kids coloring book.  You decide whose theory is right :)

My favorite one in there was what looked like a mom trying to wrangle all of her crazy children.

There was a tour group on the trail with us and we heard the guide mention a cave we could crawl in.  I can guarantee that I would not have willingly crawled into this tiny hole without reassurance about what was inside.

Inside it opened up into a large cave.  Look, we're the Croods!
