Comfy?

Cambrie is learning that she's not supposed to get out of her big-girl bed when she's taking a nap. Yesterday she couldn't quite make up her mind if it was worth getting in trouble or not, and fell asleep like this...I guess that's one way to do it!

Lullabies by Cambrie

Cambrie's collection of bedtime songs has become quite unique. There are the classics: "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," "I Am a Child of God," "Rock-a-by Baby," "Lullaby." But there are also her more inventive song requests, "ABC's," "If You're Happy and You Know It," and my favorite, "The Wheels on the Bus." This last song gets better every night. After I finish one verse I let her choose who (or what) we'll sing about next; the windows on the bus, the babies on the bus, the mommies on the bus, etc. Here is a list of verses she's requested the last few nights: mommy's eyes, mommy's eyebrows, mommy's microwave, Cambrie's elbow, Cambrie's purple baby, green water, Morgan's big puppy, yellow crackers, Lucy's mommy, and Cambrie's fingernails. She just gets a goofy grin on her face as I try to scramble together the verse and gets a real kick out of it. I wish I could remember them all, because each night there's something new :)

Translation Please

Tonight as Cambrie was going to bed, she complained that her water was wrinkly. Does anyone have a good explanation for that?

Cookie Dough

Cambrie and I made chocolate-chip cookies today. She was a great helper and dumped all of the ingredients into the bowl for me. The only spill we had was the teaspoon of salt that ended up all over her instead of with the other ingredients. I love eating the cookie dough and I'm just thrilled that Cambrie loves it too. Maybe I just like how cute she looks eating it :)

St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day! There were no mischievous leprechaun sightings this year at the Rogers' home, but Cambrie dressed up for the occasion in a sweet $1 St. Patty's hat.Our only other celebration was eating green eggs and ham for dinner. Cambrie wouldn't touch the stuff. Can't say I blame her really, it tasted great but looks so unnatural.

DC Day 1

(Disclaimer: This is a long post for posterity & grandparent purposes. Don't feel obligated to read all, or any of it).

We just got back from spending the weekend in Washington DC. It was Jeremy’s spring break and I was so ready for a family trip. I desperately needed something to take my mind off of endless days inside, work, housework, and uncompleted projects.

DAY 1
The night before I had forgotten to pack and get things ready, so when it came time to leave Friday morning it was a mad house around here. I felt like a chicken with my head chopped off as I ran around gathering clothes, putting dishes in the sink, getting books and DVD for Cambrie’s entertainment, packing lunch, and printing off directions to Mount Vernon. I was unnecessarily stressed out for the beginning of our trip. Once we started driving I calmed down and was thrilled that Cambrie was just hanging out in the back seat and didn’t require much entertainment. Yippee!

When we pulled up to the hotel, Jeremy went inside to check in while Cambrie and I stayed out in the car. I began noticing that every hotel guest was dressed in a suit or business attire. Hmm, we were a little out of place in our jeans and REI coats. We pulled the car into the garage and began to unload. Remember we were feeling a little out of place before? Now we felt really weird. Besides our suitcases (which were really backpacks and duffels) we had a pack n’ play crib, DVD player, and two bags of food and drink. Jeremy and I were both raised to save money where you could, so we packed lunch for the day and brought snacks so we didn’t have to buy anything on the street. We got some really weird looks from the streamlined business people as we walked into the hotel. As cute as Cambrie is, no one knew how to react to her either. It’s like no one had seen a toddler before. Anyway, it was nice we didn’t spend much time in public places at the hotel. The time spent in downtown DC was much better. Cambrie loved the Metro and thought the trains were great.

Our first stop was the Museum of Natural History. Cambrie is just starting to learn about dinosaurs and thought it was pretty cool to see their bones and their teeth. When we found the marine section she was in heaven. She ran around pointing to all of the fish, dolphins, turtles, and sea shells. Her favorite fossil was probably the giant sea turtle.

It was really easy to get lost in the museum; we kind of just wandered around aimlessly. What do you think of the giant shark jaw we found, or the enormous jellyfish?
Upstairs we found a butterfly exhibit. Cambrie and I paid the admission and went inside to see the butterflies up close. She didn’t know what to do. They flew around our heads, landed on flowers, walked around, and fluttered their wings. Cambrie thought they were pretty cool at first. She would point at them and make a giant “ooh” with her mouth.

You can see from this video that after they started flying close to her she got a little nervous. I picked her up right after this so we could look at some more. I was secretly hoping that a butterfly would land on us so I could get a super cute picture. I got half of my wish. A butterfly landed on Cambrie’s hand. She liked it at first, but when it didn’t fly away immediately she got scared. She started shaking her hand up and down, but the butterfly didn’t fly away. Then she started crying and shaking her arm even harder. The butterfly finally left and Cambrie was done after that. I kept trying to tell her that the butterfly was just giving her kisses, but it she was still convinced the butterfly had attacked her. I wish I had gotten it on video, it was hysterical.
It was past Cambrie’s nap time and she was starting to get very uncooperative. She didn’t enjoy the sparkly rocks (i.e. the Hope Diamond, and other gorgeous jewelry), or the pictures of the polar bears, or the Neanderthals. It was time to go. We went outside for a chance just to chill. On our walk we found an ice-skating rink right off the Mall. We sat down for awhile to watch the ice skaters. Either our corner of the rink was cursed or we just make people nervous, because one out of every four people fell down when they came close. We tried not to laugh even though it was very entertaining.
Our next stop was the National Archives. Cambrie fell asleep in the stroller on our way there which made for a very relaxing visit. Our main goal was to see the Constitution, but when we couldn’t find the rotunda right away we went to some other exhibits. I decided it would be really cool to work with the archives. There is some really neat and historical information there about anything and everything: the Cold War, past censuses, speeches from Pres. Truman, etc. When we finally found the Constitution there were only 15 minutes left until they closed for the day. We sped through the beginning of the exhibit so we could see the four pages of the Constitution, the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, the Thirteenth Amendment, and letters pertaining to Women’s Suffrage. It was humbling to see important documents that have had such impact on my everyday life.
Cambrie was still napping afterwards so we went on a walk around the US Capitol.
Since Cambrie was still napping we stopped into the Library of Congress. We ended up in the wrong building (since there are apparently two of them), and the only interesting thing we saw was a random Grammy display down a very bland hallway. The one benefit from stopping in was that the security guards were really nice and directed us to a great Greek restaurant for dinner. Cambrie woke up by then and had her first bite of hummus. She preferred the pita bread plain.
Here is Cambrie on our way home. We couldn’t find her gloves so she wore mine the whole day to keep her hands warm. I’m just glad she kept them on.

DC Day 2

DAY 2
Do you see the bed we slept in? It was king-sized. Jeremy and I thought we had gone to heaven. It was soft and huge. You have to understand that we have been sleeping in a double since we got married, and so this mattress was great. We had so much room! Anyway, onto the sight-seeing.

Our first stop was the Holocaust Museum. When I visited DC eight years ago with my family, this was one of my favorite and most memorable museums. I couldn't wait to see it again, but we were only about 25 minutes into the two-hour visit when Cambrie started to lose it. She didn’t want to ride in her stroller anymore, she wanted to walk. Lately she has been playing a game where she goes completely limp while holding your hand so you have to pull her up. She won’t walk, she won’t stand, she won’t even stay in your arms, and she just becomes “noodle baby” and won’t do anything. Well, she started playing this game and when I pulled her up from the floor she started crying like she was in pain. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t pull her up hard or any differently than I had been, she just started crying. We stepped out of the foot traffic and sat down in a video booth to see what was going on. She wouldn’t move her hand or her arm and cried when we touched it. She was definitely guarding it and it made me worried. We found a guide who showed us the way to the nurse. Cambrie hadn’t gotten any better by then and it looked like her hand was starting to swell. We decided that maybe we should take her to the ER to get an X-Ray taken since we couldn’t do anything more for her. We could barely put on her coat because she didn’t want to move her arm and when I carried her out she let her arm just hang limply by her side. I couldn’t help but think, “Oh great. I just broke my daughter’s hand." Or, "I horribly sprained her wrist." Or, "I pulled her shoulder out of its socket.” I was having visions of going to the hospital and putting Cambrie’s arm in a cast. “I would definitely choose pink, because I like hot pink. But maybe I should choose yellow because that’s Cambrie’s favorite color.” The thoughts kept coming and I couldn’t help but think it was all my fault, but I didn’t know what I did wrong.

As soon as we stepped out of the museum, Jeremy offered Cambrie a gummy to help keep her happy. She shocked us both by grabbing it with her injured arm. What?! Did we just see what we thought we saw? He offered her another one and she grabbed it too, no wincing or crying involved. You have got to be kidding. Nothing was wrong? We sat for awhile on the grass near the Washington Monument trying to decide what to do. Something had hurt her. She was in pain and her hand was a little swollen. But, she’s obviously not in pain now. She can move all of her fingers, hand and wrist, and she’s chasing us around. The doctors would just look at us like we were crazy if we went now and wouldn’t do anything since there’s nothing they could do. We decided just to keep going with our day and if there was another pain we would go to the hospital. Luckily there never was. Cambrie fell down a couple of times and didn’t even wince as she landed. At least she is okay. (This picture was taken just three mintues after the gummy incident.)
For fun we went to the Air and Space Museum. Jeremy was dying to touch a moon rock, see some rockets, and do the flight simulator. He’s a lot like my dad and loves planes. It totally brought back memories of my dad when we were there before. The one disappointment was that Jeremy also wanted to see the SR-71, the space shuttle and F-14, but they are in a separate hanger in Chantilly, Virginia. Maybe that will be next trip. He loved the flight simulator though. You get to be the pilot and the gunner in an F-14. The simulator rolls, pitches, turns, and there’s some nifty G-force going on inside of the cabin. Jeremy had a blast. It’s a good thing he didn’t have to rely on me to be his gunner, because we wouldn’t have lasted long.
After lunch we had tickets to go inside the Washington Monument. We waited for our turn in the rain. It rained the entire weekend. We came home completely soaked and grateful for the one umbrella we had remembered to bring with us. While in the Monument you go up an elevator to 500 feet and get to look out the eight windows up on top. While you’re up there you can see the White House, the National Mall, the US Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial. On the way down they clear the windows in the elevator so you can see the memorial stones inside the monument. 200 stones were donated during construction from various dignitaries and ordinary towns and they’re neat to see.
Cambrie was ready for another nap, so we took a long walk. We found the White House, Ford’s Theater, and the International Spy Museum. While at the White House, all Jeremy wanted to see was Secret Service. He was trying to talk me into jumping the fence to see what would happen. I finally convinced him that if I did that it would ruin my whole life so it probably wasn’t a good idea. He conceded but still wanted to see Secret Service.
That night we were exhausted. Dinner was take-out pizza brought back to the hotel. We picked this up from King St. in Alexandria, VA. It is a super cute town with a fun shopping night-life. Did I mention there were three ice-cream parlors next to this pizza place? Yes, I restrained myself and only came home with the pizza.
We purposely booked a hotel with a pool so Cambrie could go swimming. She’s getting better about her face getting wet and even lets us put her “under.” We’re working on jumping in. Basically she leans over the edge with arms outstretched just waiting for you to grab her. She’s not scared, just doesn’t get it yet.

DC Day 3

DAY 3
Sunday morning we had a hard time getting out of bed and missed 8:00 church. Instead we went to Mount Vernon with plans to go to church at 11:30. We got dressed in our church clothes knowing timing would be close later. We didn’t count on more rain, more dirt/mud, and an endless line of tour buses at Washington’s home. We had to wait in line about 45 minutes before we could enter his home. During this time Cambrie just wanted to kick the dirt, pick up muddy rocks, and sit on the wet grass. She didn’t make it to church very clean.
We at least made it inside the home and she was a pretty good sport about the tour. She liked seeing the baby’s bed, and their dinner tables that were set with ham ready for eating. We also saw Washington’s gardens, his stables, and his tomb. What do they say with real estate? Location, location, location. Washington definitely had that. Look at the view from his back porch. After church we changed and checked out of our hotel. Our next stop was Arlington National Cemetery. We just missed the 3:00 changing of the guard and had to wait until 4:00. During that time we walked the grounds. I love the feeling I get when I walk in cemeteries. Is that weird? It is so peaceful and relaxing. The rain made it even more beautiful and poetic. I love looking at the headstones and wondering what kind of people they were. What kind of lives they lived, and what stories they could tell. We witnessed the changing of the guard, as well as two wreath changing ceremonies which is something I’ve never seen before. It was all very solemn and beautiful at the same time.

Our last real stop was at the Lincoln Memorial. Cambrie had fallen asleep at Arlington and wasn’t very happen to wake up and see a giant Abraham Lincoln. She also has possessive tendencies. We asked a gentleman to take our picture but Cambrie was so upset that he was holding “mommy’s camera” that we couldn’t get a picture of her smiling. After she woke up a little more she was more cheerful and we got some last minute cute pictures before we left.
We had a great time in DC, but just couldn’t do it all. There’s no way you can. I can’t wait to go back to finish what we didn’t get to do.

Three years and counting...

Three years ago, March 11, 2006, Jeremy and I were married. Personally I think it was one of the greatest days EVER, but I know I'm biased. We have had a fantastic three years and I'm just so excited that we're still going strong.

Last week we went to dinner at Texas Roadhouse since Cambrie had a babysitter. We splurged with drinks, appetizer, and dessert. So tasty! I still drool when I think about my fillet... So last night's celebration was somewhat low-key, but we still partied! We started off with the delicious cheesecake I was telling you about. Right now Cambrie associates candles and cakes with parties, so we added three candles to the cake to make it official. Happy Birthday Rogers!
Then we opened our anniversary gifts. (Some of you might be saying, "These gifts look familiar.") Well that's true. The snorkeling equipment was our anniversary gift even though we got it a month ago. Cambrie hasn't seen it yet though, so for her it was great exploration time.
We have now been married for three years (really?), yes, really. And I can't think of a better way to spend those years than with Jeremy. Happy Anniversary hun!

Happy Thoughts

Do you ever have those days when you're just happy, and there's no particular reason for it? Today is one of those days. I'm just happy! It seems as though everything is making me smile. For example:

I finally bought some reusable grocery bags. I felt like I had saved the world when I used them for the first time today.
My food storage is looking great.

Cambrie is wearing some super cute button-bows I made for her last week.
I went running this morning with a good friend. We haven't run together for nearly six months and it was great to get in some early morning girl time.

I am trying out a new Scentsy scent, Lemon Lavender, and I think my house smells great.

I have only seen two bugs today! Yippee! (Yesterday we killed close to 25).

Last week I transplanted these flowers into the flower pot on my front porch. They bloomed last year and this year in a small corner next to our house without any help from me. I decided to give them the respect they deserve this year and put them where they could be seen.

I put the zipper in Cambrie's Easter dress. (It only took me three tries to get it right. I have horrible luck with zippers). I'm so excited to see it all done! I just need to stitch down the lining, hem it, and add the sparkly bow.
Today is our 3rd Anniversary!

I have been finding my all-time favorite candy, Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs, stashed all over the house with cute notes attached. Jeremy even guessed which jeans I was going to wear today-he's good.
And tonight we get to eat one of my favorite homemade desserts ever....Jell-O Cheesecake! Yum...I can't wait until it sets up.

Yea for happy days!
