Iittala

I always try to find unique, off the beaten path kind of activities to do when we travel in addition to the big tourist draws.  This time we found a glass blowing factory where we could go watch them make glass.  Iittala is a famous glass maker in Finland and they open their factory floor to the public.  Jeremy, Cambrie and I have all blown glass once, and the rest of the kids have watched Blown Away with us (a glass blowing competition) so we had a basic idea of what was going on.  But watching line work was a bit different if just as hypnotizing.  They were making two different kinds of glasses as well as the base for a lamp.  We watched for nearly thirty minutes just mesmerized.

Afterwards we went to their factory outlet to see if there was anything we wanted to bring home.  The glasses and bowls were nice, but the artistic creations were incredible and so playful!  Cambrie learned that there are color engineers who create the formulas for each color of glass, and has a new career path to explore.
