Ocean City

While Dantley was here we really wanted to take him to the beach. Schedules being what they were and the rainy weather prevailing, we finally got to go on Saturday, just hours before he left for Utah. It was a very cool day. The boys had fun in the water, but the girls preferred to spend the day dry. I actually wish we had our sweatshirts.

Here's a fun picture of Cambrie and Jeremy. She had been surprised by a wave and we were trying to warm her up. The shore was long enough that it was perfect for pulling Cambrie on a boogey board. She enjoys the water but doesn't like being splashed in the face by the waves. I wish that I could have had a ride too.The beach was perfect for splashing in puddles. Cambrie and Dantley were fun to watch dance.Dantley was determined to learn how to skim board. I didn't get a picture of his victory ride, but here is one of him trying. It's harder than it looks!

Lancaster day trip

Last Wednesday we took a trip up to Lancaster. Jeremy has never been up there since we've lived in Philly, and Dantley was very curious about the Amish. We took a tour of an Amish home and farm. Cambrie loved the pretend ride in the buggy, especially after she turned Daddy into the horse.

I think Cambrie tells me at least once a day, "When I'm big enough, I can go to school!" Just a couple more years sweetheart :) She thought this was pretty neat sitting in the desks. This water wheel was just pretty. It's a shame we weren't in matching outfits because then we could have our family pictures taken care of this year.We finished off our tour with lunch at Good 'N Plenty. There was a lot of food and we all stuffed ourselves like it was Thanksgiving. The Shoo-fly pie was especially delicious this trip. I think the highlight of the trip for Dantley was just seeing the people as we drove by. He really wanted us to stop just so he could say hi and talk to them for a bit. I have to admit that I'm fascinated by their culture also. It's so peaceful up there. We love visiting Lancaster

OBX

It's so hard getting back into real-life-mode after a great week long vacation. That's what I'm working on now. Yes, I still have to go grocery shopping and we've been home five days. But really, after staying a week down in Outer Banks, NC, can anyone blame me? After our Jamestown visit we just kept driving and met up with the McGowans, Farnsworths, Dobsons, Palmers, and Stevens at the beach house we had rented for the week. We were fully prepared for a week full of sand, surf, games, and sun. We ended up getting three of our four wishes. The beach was just across the road from the house, so we spent every day there. Cambrie never tired of the holes to dig, and feet to bury. Unfortunately it was only warm and sunny the last day we were there, so most of our beach time was spent dry and out of the water. Here is a picture of the whole crew. Our family picture on the beach. You can barely see Cambrie because she was still waking up. Ironically she took her only nap of the week on the day it was sunny. The guys were great about digging really big holes for the kids to play in. The holes were the best babysitters ever!Jeremy bought a skim board and actually got pretty good at it. Even on the days that the red, "No Swimming" flags were posted, he could still surf the sand. The guys all looked pretty hot in their rash guards and it's a good thing they had them. Every time they wiped out on their boards they rolled in rocks and sand and would have been pretty torn up without them.We took a morning off from the beach and went crabbing. I didn't even know such things existed. Basically you put a raw chicken leg on a hook and lower your string into the water. When the crab grabs it, you slowly pull it up and swoop your net below to catch it. If it was larger than five inches we got to take them home. We ended up with six that we promptly cooked and shared. Quite tasty! With this picture I wasn't fast enough to capture the snapping turtle that Debbie had found.Cambrie thought it was pretty neat to hold the giant nets. I was just afraid she'd fall in and be eaten by the snapping turtle or pinched by all the crabs.I'm not sure the name of this lighthouse, but it was where we rendezvoused for the crabbing exhibition. It was pretty cute.We were even able to go on a date night while we were there. We split the kids in half and the parents took turns enjoying the thrills of Kill Devil Hills. We went laser tagging with the Stevens and Farnsworths, then finished off with a round of mini-golf. I had three holes-in-one, and Jeremy had two. Even though we didn't have the lowest score over all, it was a pretty sweet game. Our beach house was only about a mile away from Kitty Hawk, the place where the Wright Brothers first flew. It was awesome being there. We saw replicas of the planes, location markers for each successful powered flight, and saw all sorts of pictures from their trials and errors. I was fascinated. On the top of a nearby hill where they launched their gliders off of, there is a monument that we climbed up to. Hurray for flight! When we weren't on the beach or out touring the area, we spent a lot of time being goofy at the beach house. All of the ladies found these matching shirts at a store named, Wings, and we just had to model them for the camera. Thanks everyone for an awesome time!

Williamsburg & Jamestown

For our family vacation this summer we headed down south to Williamsburg and Jamestown, Virginia. One of my old roommates and her husband are living down there so it seemed like a perfect opportunity to catch up. Colonial Williamsburg was super quaint and really cute. All the houses in about a four block radius are restored and have the old-time charm to them, even the ones that are private residences and not open to the public. We didn't feel like paying the admission prices to go inside all the homes, so instead we opted for walking around the grounds and exploring the gardens, which you can do for free. We found some fun photo opportunities.

Cambrie climbed her first tree. Jeremy and I were arrested by Cambrie and put into the stocks. And we found this "secret garden" like trail behind some homes. We got lost in a maze of white picket fences and garden gates and it took us awhile to get out. We eventually came out in the backyard in one of the homes that required tickets for tours...oops.After Williamsburg we drove ten minutes down the road to Jamestown. I admit that I couldn't remember a lot from my history classes about Jamestown, but after we walked through the displays it all came back to me-Pocahontas, John Smith, settlers vs. Indians, starvation time...I wish my mind wasn't a giant sieve. Jamestown was awesome. There were so many interesting things to see and even Cambrie enjoyed being there. Of course her favorite part was playing in the dirt on the floors of the homes.

Cambrie playing pastor, "Repent ye!"They had some armor lying around in the fort for the kids to try on. I've always wondered how uncomfortable those helmets are so I tried on a set too. In case you're wondering, they're heavy and they hurt. I had to hold Cambrie's off her head a little bit because she tipped over with the full weight of it. Cambrie thought it was awesome to be wearing armor. We were witnessing a rifle presentation. Jeremy was able to get this shot right as the sound ricocheted around us. Cambrie didn't like how loud it was.The last stop on our tour were the three boats the settlers used when the crossed the ocean, the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. I can't believe that people lived for months on these ships; they were tiny. I've never been on a ship of this size before so it was pretty interesting to see where the sailors slept (on top of the cargo), the captain's quarters (pretty much the best room on board), the hold, the cannons and the riggings. Cambrie really wanted them to give her a ride on the river. I had a hard time convincing her that these boats weren't going to give us a ride, they were too tied up with the ropes. However, she still really enjoyed it. She was so dirty after playing in the dirt that I let her splash around in the excess water from the fountain out front. She was pretty excited about that since I had been telling her no all weekend.

And I'm kicking myself now that we didn't get a picture with Melissa and Tim. So sorry guys! I wasn't thinking! We went to a fun play the night before about a colonial variety show gone wrong. Just ask Jeremy about the hissing porcupine and see if he'll imitate the sound for you :) Then like old times we stayed up late playing games. They taught us how to play Bohnanza, a strategy game that involves planting beans. Thanks guys for letting us stay over. We had so much fun!

Drumroll please...

All righty everyone. After much speculation (and a doctor's appointment this afternoon) I can finally announce if our baby is a boy or a girl. What do you think? I'll tell you what I thought. I thought that this cute little baby was a boy. As it turns out....This cuddling sweetheart is a GIRL! I was completely flabbergasted and had the nurse check three times before I believed her. Cambrie is going to have a little sister and seems to be excited about it; although we'll see what happens in January when it becomes reality. Yea for another little sweetheart!

Strasburg Railroad

Yesterday Cambrie, Ali, Morgan and I went to see what the Strasburg Railroad is all about. The girls seemed to think that riding trains was a great way to spend a Saturday. When we got there my first thought was that it felt like a super-miniature Disneyland. It was a small railroad-themed place with people walking around in period costumes and train conductor hats. There was a full-sized train to ride, a small miniature train, a pump car, and little crank cars for the kids. I was just glad the rain stayed away so we could play the whole day.

Here is a picture of the silly girls waiting in line to buy our train tickets. The Strasburg railroad. The more I leaned out of the window to get a good picture of Cambrie, the more she would lean out. I just had to take what I could get with this one.The girls actually have genuine smiles on their faces. They were excited to ride the train. One of the characters came around taking pictures of everyone. She let the girls wear these hats. Morgan wasn't sure what to think of her. Here is a picture of Cambrie on the crank car. I was shocked she could generate enough power with her arms to move it. she was so proud. And one of the girls' favorite parts of the day was running on all of the boardwalks. Here they were dancing, but they spend a lot of their time chasing each other and running into each other.
