We have a new friend staying with us! Her name is Jess and she's from Leicester, England. She is here with the Challenger soccer coaching program and is staying with us until May. She has to spend most of her time coaching all over the state, but today she and I both had a few free hours that overlapped, so we went on an adventure! I've had the Manitou Incline on my bucket list for years, but it's been a bit of a challenge finding the right time to go down. Jess was in the mood for exploring so we made it happen. The climb starts at 6,600' and there are 2760 steps to the top.
From the bottom it looks a bit intimidating but we didn't know what it would actually feel like. We saw people gasping for air and we saw people running up and down. We figured we'd be somewhere in the middle. Jess has only been in Colorado for ten days, so the elevation was a real thing for her. As strong as she is, we needed to take a couple of breathing breaks. That's just fine, it gave us more chances to enjoy the view. She was actually teasing me that the view from the top had better be worth it otherwise she'd be pretty angry with me.
Once we made it to the top we were pretty happy we had made the climb. The view was beautiful and everyone at the top was in a very celebratory mood. She called her parents while she was up there and it was fun listening to their conversation, "I'm on top of a mountain right now mum!"
We opted for the Barr trail on the way down instead of the steps. It was three times as long, but it was actually really pretty and I'm glad we went that way.
Now if we can just find more time to take more adventures! And maybe one day I'll be crazy enough to try to fitness challenge on these stairs.
